About

A walk themed on George Stephenson, the ‘father of railways’ and chesterfield’s own ‘rocket man’. On a mix of urban and countryside paths we take in landmarks relevant to this great engineer to discover something about him, his connection and attachment to Chesterfield.

Verbal and visual information stops along the way allow us to take in the Stephenson memorial hall, pavement tickets, the remaining building forming part of the 1840 railway station, views over Chesterfied and surrounding countryside, Tapton hamlet, Tapton House (where we’ll have lunch) and finally Holy Trinity Church where his remains lie. A visit to the church is arranged if circumstances allow.

Discover interesting facets about Chesterfield’s heritage.

Those that need it will be guided back the short distance to the town centre for transport links.

Walk grading - leisurely (walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience).

Please note we will cross 3 public footbridges spanning the A61 dual carriageway and the railway line.
