Etwall Well Dressings

Etwall is an old Saxon settlement located to the south-west of Derby.

The importance of wells to the village is apparent from its name, written 'Etewelle' in the Doomsday Book. Well dressing was first celebrated in the village in 1970 and takes place over the third weekend of May each year.

This year, Etwall will be celebrating over 50 years of well dressing with 8 sites to visit, as well as the opportunity to have-a-go at well dressing under expert supervision. Both churches will also have themed floral decoration.

A blessing of the wells service will take place at 11.30am on the Saturday to officially open the Festival. However, all the well dressings can be viewed from mid-morning onwards.

In addition to the well dressings there will be a variety of family entertainment on the Saturday and Sunday including:

A flypast by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster(tbc); traditional dancing; live music; mini traction engine rides; face painting; puppet shows; fairground rides; football, rugby and bowls competitions; a climbing wall and birds of prey.

There will also be an art exhibition, crafts fair, a classic vehicles display, a well dressing archive display, a local history display, a special cake competition and auction-off and a Children's Trail.

Home-made food and refreshments will be available. There are also three centrally located pubs in the village.

Etwall, DerbyEtwall was originally named after the Saxon King 'Eata' whose well or spring still survives near the parish church in the village centre. St Helen, to whom the church is dedicated, is associated with Holy Wells elsewhere in the Country.
