Join us to discover the hidden gems of Cromford in the north of the World Heritage Site.  From the workers housing and water management sluices (known locally as the bearpit), to the Cromford Canal home to the oldest railway workshops in the world, your knowledgeable guide will take you on a fascinating tour of the area.

The tour includes:

A guided tour of Cromford Mills, the first water powered cotton mill in the world. Including a visit to the Arkwright Experience and Visitor Centre to hear the story of the Derwent Valley and how it changed the World.

A guided walking tour through Cromford, the world’s first purpose built industrial village, also taking in the Cromford Canal and Wharf.

You will have time to buy your own lunch at Cromford Mills, or you can bring your own refreshments.

Board the narrow boat “Birdswood” on return trip to High Peak Junction, along the historic and beautiful Cromford Canal.


Guided tour of the Cromford Canal aqueduct, an unspoilt example of eighteenth-century engineering in an amazing setting and High Peak Junction visiting the oldest railway workshop in the world to discover unique relics and curiosities of this pioneer railway.

This will be followed by a visit to the John Smedley’s Mill Shop. The world-famous factory has remained in continuous family operation since the eighteenth century.
