This escorted tour enables you to explore the fascinating history of Belper, a town at the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Jedediah Strutt built his first cotton spinning mill here in 1776, and the Strutt family were ground-breaking in providing housing and amenities in what became the world’s first industrial town. Your tour guide will also point out the places of interest along your journey to and from Belper, as you travel through the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
The tour includes:
Guided tour of Strutt’s North Mill & Derwent Valley Visitor Centre, looking at the original machines, and hearing the stories behind them. The North Mill was rebuilt in 1804 as an iron-framed, fire-proof building, using the pioneering building techniques that gave birth to modern-day skyscrapers.
Walking tour of the Belper Mills site to see the workers’ housing and amenities and to trace the water courses that powered the Mills.
Reservations for a pub lunch at one of Belper’s most popular venues. (Menu for information: you will be responsible for ordering and paying on the day.)
Walking tour of Belper River Gardens, (an Edwardian park built for the workers), with an opportunity to relax and enjoy a cup of something overlooking the river.
