Kalamazoo Dance Band at Chesterfield 1940s Market 2017

About

Shop in style at the Chesterfield 1940s Market

Residents and visitors to Chesterfield can enjoy themselves during half term as the annual 1940s market returns for 2022.

Taking place on Thursday 27 October between 10am and 4pm, visitors can enjoy 40s music, entertainment, exhibits and meet the stall holders in period dress.

Kalamazoo dance band will once again be back by popular demand performing throughout the day in New Square. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes and join in the fun!

The weekly flea market will take place in the market place with traders in 1940s costume. There will be a competition for the best dressed stall and visitors are encouraged to get into the 40s spirit by dressing in period costumes.

Entertainment includes an escape artist and a variety of 1940s singers located around the town centre. There will also be a display of classic cars, a vintage fire engine and displays about the Land Army and 1940s mining.

Chesterfield Museum staff will also be attending in 1940s costume with handling objects from their WW2 education box and explanations on how rationing operated. They can be found in the Pavements Shopping Centre (in the old Shoe Zone unit) alongside Wessex Archaeology with their design and print a 1940s style tile activity and a re-enactor talking about bomb disposal and delivering a 'bomb' defusing activity.

Another new attraction this year is the 1940s Home Guard encampment which can be found in the Crooked Spire churchyard. They will run activities throughout the day including drill lessons for children, a first aid station and a signal station.

There will be lots to see and a the full programme of entertainment for the day is listed below.

Visitors are encouraged to use public transport to attend the event but there is also lots of parking available in Chesterfield. Full details of both council owned and private car parks can be found here

Free coach parking spaces are available for groups or organisations visiting the event, but these must be pre-booked here.
