Bolsover Grand Slam
Starting from the castle entrance, a short descent provides a particularly magnificent view of the frontage of Bolsover Castle. Descending further we pass through a model village with a dragon to remind us of our very ancient history.
On then to the birth place of Peter Fidler, a giant in Canada if not here, and first recorder of the Athabasca Tar Sands. Once through the reserve a gentle climb leads to Sutton Scarsdale Hall. A trail across rolling farm lands leads on to an old mill, now restored to working order, before we begin another gentle climb to both the old and slightly more recent Hardwick Halls.
We return via a route along the ridge which connects the Castle and the Hall with views of the Doe Lea valley. Some would say, now blighted by the motorway but, without doubt now recovering from its industrial heritage, perhaps to return one day to its former beauty.
Finally, and just before we return to the starting point, we shall visit two of the Cundy Houses which were used as part of the Castle’s water supply.
