10 Great Walks in the Peak District & Derbyshire
Here’s a handy list of some of the best walks in the Peak District and Derbyshire, ranging from challenging hikes to relaxing riverside strolls.
These walks let you see some of the best views of Peak District landscape and take you through some of the most beautiful Derbyshire villages. You will experience the diversity of this fascinating National Park, such as the famous dark gritstone of Kinder Scout and the contrasting limestone of Cavedale, just two examples of how every Peak District walking route has it’s own unique characteristics.
The villages of Castleton and Bakewell in Derbyshire are two very popular spots to start walks but also as villages to stay in the Peak District. One of these walks has incredible historic and cultural importance; Kinder Scout, starting from Hayfield, is the route walked by the brave ramblers who took part in the Mass Trespass. Having occurred 85 years ago this spring, this peaceful protest paved the way for the Access Land to become free to explore, as at that time, in 1932, walking on owned land was forbidden.
There are also two walking routes which take you round the grounds of Chatsworth, giving you a chance to see the ‘Palace of the Peak’ in the stunning surroundings of the rolling Derbyshire hills. You can also stop for Afternoon Tea at the Chatsworth in the Cavendish Restaurant.
Whenever you are exploring the Peak District & Derbyshire it is important to always plan your route, bring a map and compass handy at all times. Also come prepared with good walking boots and plenty of water and snacks.
