Cycling & Mountain Biking in The Peak District
Whether it be a family cycle ride through on a traffic free cycle trail in Derbyshire or some more challenging Peak District mountain biking that you’re after- the Peak District and Derbyshire offers all types of cycle routes for all types of cyclists.
Leisure cyclists should make a bee-line for miles and miles of traffic-free trails, lovingly restored on former railway lines, including the Monsal Trail, Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail, Manifold Track, Longdendale Trail and the Five Pits Trail. They really do make a perfect place to get out on your bike and enjoy the fresh air.
Of these trails, the Monsal Trail has to be the most spectacular. It is a section of disused Midland Railway line that once connected Manchester with London. Built in 1863, this trail goes over some fantastic viaducts, the biggest one being Headstone Viaduct, giving cyclists wonderful view as they pedal by!
There are also lots of great places to rent bikes, such as Glory Days in Bakewell specialising in fabulous vintage bicycles, Derwent Cycle Hire in Bamford or Monsal Trail Cycle Hire at Hassop Station, Blackwell Mill Cycle Hire you can also stop off for an energy boosting slab of cake!
For mountain bikers, the riding terrain varies from tough, exposed moorland routes to green lanes and bridleways. For a real challenge, head north for a high-octane workout in Edale or the Hope Valley, Jacob’s Ladder, Eyam, Ashover and Stanage Edge. Less demanding routes can be found in the Goyt Valley near Buxton or on the Derwent Reservoirs circuit.
Many places to stay, eat and drink cater for cyclists, so you’re always assured of somewhere to stop on your travels to rest your weary legs.
