On the Trail of Bargains

On the Trail of Bargains

This itinerary for bargain hunters sets you on a journey across the area from city centre to countryside, from boutique traders and retailers to Factory Shops and everything in between.

Start off in the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Derby, where shopping opportunities abound from all of your favourite high street brands at intu Derby to the boutique, independent shops lining the streets of the Cathedral Quarter.

If you’re looking for tableware then a trip to Royal Crown Derby is a must whilst in the city, alternatively drive a short distance north on the A38 out of the city to Denby Pottery Visitor Centre, which is located in attractive buildings set around an enclosed courtyard, with an extensive factory shop with a huge selection of new, current and discontinued seconds. The Denby Home Store is a contemporary showcase which sells best quality Denby ware, seasonal home accessories and other products. After a spot of retail therapy why not stay for a factory tour and a bite to eat.

Jump back onto the A38 heading further north, crossing the M1 and stopping off at East Midlands Designer Outlet to stock up on your favourite fashion brands at discounted prices.

Afterwards journey back in towards the heart of Derbyshire stopping off firstly at Belper for a real taste of independent shopping having achieved the accolade of the Winner of Winners at the 2014 Great British High Street Awards. The delightful high street is packed with specialist shops and a popular monthly Farmers' Market takes place in the historic Market Place, it even has its own charming little independent cinema.

Leaving Belper, enjoy a short journey through beautiful countryside for more bargain hunting at the prestigious heritage British knitwear manufacturer, John Smedley Limited at Lea Bridge, where you'll find more than 200 years of experience combined with an innovative fashion edge to create styles constructed with the utmost attention to detail.

Further north along the Derwent Valley leads you through Matlock, another great stop for small, independent retailers and onwards to Peak Village Shopping, nestled in the hills of Derbyshire in the small picturesque village of Rowsley just a stone’s throw from Chatsworth. Open every day except Christmas Day, visit for great value and choice in fashion and accessories, home ware, gifts, outdoor clothing and equipment.

Upon leaving Peak Shopping Village, head north on the A6 towards Bakewell for about a mile, before turning left onto the B5056. From here it’s a glorious cross-country drive through the Peak District National Park, to your final shopping destination. The market town of Ashbourne, just on the edge of the national park, and a jumping off point for the scenic beauty of Dovedale, is a treasure trove of antique shops. There’s also a great selection of independent retailers, and a smattering of high street brands too, but it’s all about the antiques in Ashbourne. Most are clustered along Church Street and you could literally spend hours meandering the cobbled streets of this pretty town, popping in and out of shops and gorging on homemade local produce from one of the many delis found here.

This is clearly quite a lot to fit into a day, so make a stay of it and base yourself in Derby where you’ll find a vast number of eateries, hostelries as well as theatres, cinemas and other entertainment options to spend the evening after a hard days shopping!
