Castle, Market and Spire

Castle, Market and Spire

This itinerary is based around the North East part of the Peak District and Derbyshire, towards Chesterfield.

Kick off your trip with a visit to English Heritage's Bolsover Castle, a 17th century mansion built on the site of a Norman fortress and explore the charming and spectacular interiors, as well as to admire the restoration of the original painted decoration. A hand-held audio tour is available at the Castle.

Take lunch in their fabulous cafe showcasing the best of British produce, using local suppliers wherever possible, be sure to try the Bolsover Cake, baked to an historical recipe!

From here make a beeline for the charming free museum at Revolution House where, in 1688, three local noblemen met at the Cock and Pynot alehouse (now known as Revolution House) to begin planning their part in the overthrow of James II.

Spend the afternoon in Chesterfield, where you can explore one of the largest open air markets in the country – there's a great range of goods available, as well as regular specialist markets, flea markets and Farmers' Markets.

If you're feeling fit, don't forget to take the opportunity to climb the 144 steps to the top of the tower of the ‘Crooked Spire’ for stunning views out over the town. A hand-held audio tour of town centre is available from Chesterfield Tourist Information Centre.

To round off your day, book a performance at Chesterfield's Pomegranate Theatre – one of the oldest in the country – which plays host to professional as well as local theatre companies.

Round off the evening in Chesterfield which is full of great places to eat and drink where you can explore the globe by cuisine, or stay true to Derbyshire with something tasty and local!

Overnight in Chesterfield where there's also a great range of accommodation options too from hotels, B&Bs, self-catering, and Camping and Caravanning a little further out of the town.

After a scrummy breakfast head for the trio of attactions awaiting you on the Hardwick Estate. Firstly, drop in to Stainsby Mill and discover for yourself the workplace of a 19th Century miller, before heading on up the very long and winding road to the hugely impressive Hardwick Hall.

This glass covered masterpiece was first created in the 1500's by the formidable 'Bess of Hardwick', thought to have been one of the most powerful women in the country at the time. After a morning of exploring the house and gardens have lunch in the exquisite cafe on site.

Approaching Hardwick Hall you will have noticed some ruins on the left. This is the fascinating remains of the original, first Hardwick Hall, the aptly named Hardwick Old Hall.  Run by the English Heritage, you'll need a seperate ticket to gain entry. A shorter visit than it's newer version, but nonetheless fascinating and intriguing.

If all of that isn't enough for you, then there's more than 300 acres of historic parkland surrounding the Hall, with ancient woodlands and wildlife-rich fishing lakes to explore.
