48 hours in Bakewell

48 hours in Bakewell

This itinerary based in the historic market town of Bakewell, famed for its sweet confection, includes some Peak District classics!

Start the day with a leisurely stroll around the attractive market town of Bakewell. Visit on Monday's to experience the hustle and bustle of the outdoor market, while just over the River Wye, the Agricultural Centre also holds a cattle and sheep market every Monday. Be sure to call in at the popular Farmers' Market, also in the Agricultural Business Centre (held on the last Saturday of the month), where you can buy food and other local products direct from farmers, producers and craftsmen. Look out for products carrying the National Park's Environmental Quality Mark (EQM).

Bakewell PuddingsLuncthime is an obvious choice. No visit to Bakewell is complete without sampling the ubiquitous Bakewell Pudding, not to be confused with a Bakewell Tart!!

You can pick up a pud in many places around the town, but if you want to be truly authentic then it must be sampled at the Original Pudding Bakewell Pudding shop which, as the name suggests, is the birthplace of this delicacy. If you're after something a little less sweet then fear not, they serve all sorts of food in their very fine tea room upstairs.

After lunch, and suitably stuffed, there's a great choice of things to do in and around Bakewell – if history and heritage is your thing, you'll be spoilt for choice, with the enchanting Old House Museum a short from the Bakewell Pudding Shop. Here you can explore magical Tudor beamed rooms with wattle/daub partitions and great open fireplaces, with their very own Tudor toilet and a Victorian privy! With historical toys, textile display, Tudor dressing up box, dolls house to play with and courtyard games plus artists in residence throughout the year there's sure to be something for everyone!

A couple of miles south of the town on the A6 is medieval Haddon Hall, one of the finest examples of a fortified manor house anywhere. Inside you'll find a medieval kitchen and an Elizabethan long gallery, and even its church, whilst outside is a beautiful terraced garden.

Spent the night in any of the numerous B&Bs and hotels located in and around the town, and with plenty of pubs and resturants you won't be short of places to top up on food and drink again in the evening.

You'll have needed a good nights rest because day two will be a busy one!

Start the day early with an revitalise walk along the Monsal Trail which follows the former railway line of the London Midland Railway. You join the trail from Bakewell itself, but we'd recommend that you head a little further out of the town to Hassop Station. From here it's a 3 to 4 mile round trip to the stunning, breathtaking views of Monsal Viaduct and Monsal Head. Well worth the effort. Return to Hassop Station for lunch, and delicious homemade cake!

Two options from here, you could extend your walk and call it a day on the trail, and stay another night in Bakewell, or head straight to Chatsworth. No visit to the area is complete without going to Chatsworth. It truly is one of the finest historic houses in the country, and with 105 acres of landscape garden, shops, restaurants, farmyard, adventure playground and estate parkland, you could easily spend the whole day here.
