From nature-themed activities and open-air cinema to strongman events and country shows, there are lots of events and activities on offer this summer in the Peak District & Derbyshire. Here’s a round-up of the best events taking place to keep the whole family busy over the school holidays.

Summer at Chatsworth

Visit Chatsworth this summer for a fun-filled day out. From meeting friendly farmyard animals to a guided tour of the house or music in the garden, there's something everyone.

On selected dates throughout August, children can look out for lots of different types of butterfly and learn how to identify them on a Butterfly Walk or bumblebee safari.

Enjoy Outdoor Cinema under the stars, (18th-21st August), and watch film favourites including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

No visit would be complete without enjoying all the fun of the adventure playground in the farmyard, plus don't miss Radical Horizons: The Art of Burning Man, with spectacular sculpture in the free to access Chatsworth park.

Calke Abbey

To help people make the most of the long days and get outdoors, Calke Abbey has a host of fun and engaging activities. The 'unstately' home's Garden of Imagination is packed full of creative games, to allow littles ones to connect with nature and awaken the senses.

A new Pavilion of Play, created by Wild Rumpus, has also been added this year, including giant periscopes and ear trumpets. Activities can be found across Calke with a bootcamp, including a rope walk, knot tying and much more set up at Calke Explore for those seeking a thrill.

Soak up the views of the estate, with a relaxing bike ride along the Tramway Trail, unwind with a picnic in the stunning grounds of Calke or find shade on the gentle blue walk through the Serpentine Woods. Or you can cool off inside the house and discover a new display of sports equipment and activewear from the collection, along with snippets of oral histories from those that played at Calke.

The Children’s Country House at Sudbury

Open every day until 5 September, The Children’s Country House at Sudbury has a fun filled summer holiday programme. You can explore the grasshopper trail in the garden, try den building or take a moment to relax with our mindfulness plaques.

The Museum has some new experiences, including spaces where you can make your own collection, reading bedtime stories in the home gallery and the much-loved chimney.

The new Activity Hub has also been launched this year, with all day crafting and activities, plus, the option to go bigger with special activity workshops on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays 11am and 2pm (advanced booking required).

All visits need to be pre-booked via the website. Please note, the Hall is currently closed and will re-open later in 2022.

Hardwick Hall, Chesterfield

Hardwick's secret walled orchard will be filled with adventure and adrenaline this summer, where visitors of all ages can unleash their inner child. Enjoy friendly competition with classic games like tennis and rounders, aim for gold with archery or race around the giant natural assault course. As an extra bonus, on some days there will be an amazing climbing wall so visitors can push themselves to their limit.

Ilam Park, Peak District

Ilam Park is a great place for families and dog walkers, with gentle riverside walks and far-reaching views. A whole host of sporting equipment will be available to borrow this summer, so come back regularly and try something new. There will also be things to do in The Oaks (behind the tea-room), especially for little ones. If you are feeling creative join the summer Art Trail - be inspired by the landscape to draw, write, make music or whatever your creativity desires.

Kedleston Hall, near Derby

With 800 acres of parkland to investigate at Kedleston Hall, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Stretch your legs in Kedleston’s park and gardens with a range of activities encouraging children to be active outside. Derbyshire Archery Club will be delivering free archery every Wednesday until the end of August and orienteering is available at Kedleston every day - pick up a map from the Visitor Reception building.

Before you leave, don’t forget to pop into the second-hand bookshop (located within the stableyard) and pick up a summer read. The shop stocks an extensive range including children’s' books.

Longshaw Estate, Peak District

Longshaw Estate, provides a stunning backdrop for an adventure in the great outdoors. It’s a great hub to explore Burbage and the Eastern Moors - from enjoying the view from Dukes Seat, to exploring Padley Gorge. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer holidays there’ll be extra sporting activities at the Moorland Discovery Centre.

Peak District Highland Games, Matlock Farm Park

One of the most exciting events in the Peak District's calendar is back for 2022! On Bank Holiday Sunday (28th August 2022), watch talented strong men compete in events including the 8-tonne Tractor Pull, Tug of War, Stone Throw and the Tossing of the Caber.
The day includes range of food, market and craft stalls with a Bradfield Brewery beer tent and Franklin & Sons gin garden for summer refreshments.
There's also an interactive exotic animal encounter, along with much of the usual fun of the farm park, including sheep racing, small animal handling and playtime fun with their new Enchanted Hamlet and Jumping Pillow.

Forest for the Future, Derby Marketplace

The Derby Market Place has been transformed into a woodland wonderland this summer. Until 27th August 2022, the Marketplace will host a series of family-friendly events.

The space is free to access for residents and is just one of four Urban Forests in the UK and the only one in the East Midlands. Relax among 125 trees and around 300 shrubs, sit back on the picnic benches for al-fresco dining and learn more about climate change, biodiversity and the natural environment at pop-up events including Down To Earth's potting sheds.

Cromford Mills, near Matlock

Discover a summer full of exciting things to experience at Cromford Mills, which is open 7 a days a week. Try pond dipping, listen to fascinating stories, experience live theatre, go on a walking tour of the Derwent Valley, express yourself in one of their Thursday Art Workshops, meet a Dalek or a Thunderbird, buy something unique at a market, and discover wonderful, independent shops!

Cromford Mills' talented guides will also be on-hand to offer guided tours of the site, with audio tours available to guide you through Cromford village.

Retro Arcade, Derby Museum of Making

From 19th to-21st August 2022, visitors to Derby's new Museum of Making can travel back in time for retro gaming heaven with arcade classics, retro consoles and pinball machines galore. A great place to learn about Derby's 300 year history of making, the museum was recently shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year Award.

Bubble Walkabout at Peak Wildlife Park, Leek

Every Wednesday throughout August (3rd, 10th, 17th, 24, 31st August 2022), head along to Peak Wildlife Park's bubble walkabout. Discover giant bubbles, clouds of bubbles and a whole host of bubble related fun!

Plus, you'll get the chance to come face to face with exotic and endangered animals from across three continents, including lemurs and penguins.

Ilkeston Heritage & Classic Vehicle Show 

Ilkeston’s popular classic car show is set to roar back into life this summer. The Ilkeston Heritage and Classic Vehicle Show will hit the road on Sunday 14th August 2022 bringing the sights and sounds of yesteryear to the town centre, filling the Market Place and surrounding streets with colourful memories.

Wander around hundreds of classic and sports cars, motorbikes and scooters, lorries, buses, tractors and steam engines enjoying chats with proud owners about their history.

Children's Crafts at Dronfield Hall Barn

Join Dronfield Hall Barn this summer for fun filled children’s craft sessions. This historic Grade II* building was rescued from dereliction and re-developed as a heritage and arts activities centre by the Dronfield Heritage Project. Craft sessions are held every Thursday during August 2022. No booking required, just £2.50 per child.

Woodland Adventure Days at Shining Cliff Woods

From 1st-3rd August 2022, the picturesque Shining Cliff Woods at Ambergate is holding full day sessions for children aged 5-12, based on the themes of fire, water and pirates and mermaids.
Learn how to be safe around the campfire, discover different ways to get the fire lit and do some campfire cooking; learn all about the wonderful world of water, and enjoy a Pirates and Mermaids themed day full of fun, games, adventures and imagination.
The sessions include a Relax Kids session, led by a licenced Relax Kids coach. These sessions begin with high energy movement and games, followed by calming yoga stretches, then a guided self or peer massage (on backs). Then positive affirmations and a calming relaxation story to finish.

Teddy Bear's Picnic at Crich Tramway Village

Bring your own teddy bear and picnic for the Crich Tramway Teddy Bear’s Picnic on 28th-29th August 2022. Enjoy children’s entertainment from 12.30p-2.30pm. Follow the ‘Teddy Trail’ on the woodland walk from Wakebridge to Derwent View, and look out for live teddy appearances.

Plus, ride on the vintage trams and wander the vintage streets at the home of the National Tramway Museum.

On Saturday 6th August 2022, the Kilburn, Denby & Horsley Carnival returns for its' second year with lots to see and do for all the family.
