Especially when we have heaps of holiday ideas and things to do in the Peak District and Derbyshire for the whole family this summer. We’ve got fun-fuelled events - from markets and mazes to outdoor theatre and films under the stars. Plus, you'll find plenty of places to go and things to do with the kids throughout the school holidays. Here's our round-up of the best events and days out with the children in the Peak District and Derbyshire...


Maze 52: Ednaston Maize Maze

From 6 August onwards

Enjoy an a-maizing day out and find fun for the whole family at the brand new Maize Maze at Ednaston near Ashbourne. Try to find your way out of both the main and mini mazes as you navigate through the twisting paths designed to ‘corn-fuse’! Come and play the maze games, throw bean bags, hoops and take a selfie with a real life John Deere tractor. Open 10am-5pm daily during August. Tickets can be bought on the day, just turn up and pay.


Step back into the Stone Age at Creswell Crags

7-8 August 2021

Ever wondered what life might have looked like inside a cave during the Stone Age? For this special weekend at Creswell Crags you will get the rare opportunity to see Stone Age people setting home at Creswell Crags again after an 11,000 year absence! As well as a huge selection of Stone Age objects and materials in the camp, you’ll be able to see them demonstrating crafts such as flintknapping, fire making, bone & antler carving and many more.


Discover the delights of Derby Ram Trail

Follow this baa-rilliant family-friendly scuplture trail around Derby city centre and discover a flock of colourful 5ft rams. See if you can spot them all, and don't miss a visit to the new Museum of Making in Derby's historic Silk Mill, charting 300 years of making in the city! Once you've worked up an appetite, sit back, relax and enjoy freshly-cooked food al fresco at Derby Marketplace.


Enjoy films under the stars at Cinema in the Valley

13-14 August 2021

Grab your popcorn for 'Cinema In The Valley’ in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site this summer. Pack a picnic and watch favourites such as The Greatest Showman, Labyrinth, Mamma Mia and The Blues Brothers at Derby Rugby Club and Belper Town Football Club. The events are backed by trentbarton’s mango ticketing app, so there will be additional bus services to help film fans to easily get to the valley locations and home again!

Head back to the 1940s Homefront at Crich Tramway Village

14-15 August 2021

Take a step back to 1940s' Britain on the Homefront at this popular weekend event, held at the atmospheric home of the National Tramway Museum near Matlock.  Enjoy live 1940s' entertainment, meet the re-enactors and watch the group displays on the Woodland Walk, before climbing aboard a traditional vintage tram for a journey down the re-created period streets.


Stock up on local produce at Cromford Mills' Artisan Market

15 August 2021

On the historic site of the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill, you'll find this marvellous Artisan Market showcasing local makers, artisans and producers. Cromford Mills' Artisan Market runs each third Sunday of the month in the historic Mill Yard. With a focus on quality producers and skilled craftspeople, you'll find something to suit all tastes. Follow your visit up with a peaceful wander on the nearby Cromford Canal; a haven for wildlife.


Grab a picnic blanket for Outdoor Theatre at Hardwick Hall

17-18 August 2021

Against the impressive backdrop of the National Trust's Hardwick Hall near Chesterfield, join The Three Inch Fools theatre company for an evening packed with wildly-inventive story-telling, fast-paced drama and a host of musical instruments as they perform the classic, Robin Hood, on 17 and 18 August.

Swap the sun-soaked vineyards of France for the ‘hidden’ slopes of Wessington at the scenic Amber Valley Vineyards. Stock up on fresh produce at their Orchard Farmers’ Market on 21 Aug, and don't miss a visit to the impressive Artisan Market on 28 Aug. Browse around 40 stalls showcasing the best local crafters, makers, artists, artisanal food and drink and street foods with a background of lovely music, set in and around a gorgeous orchard overlooking the Amber Valley.  


Cheer on the Grand Medieval Joust at Bolsover Castle

28-30 August 2021

Experience this exhilarating spectacle of speed and skill as four legendary knights compete for honour and glory in the Grand Medieval Joust. See lances shatter, feel the thunder of hooves and hear the roar of the crowd as reputations are won and lost in the grounds of Bolsover Castle. Immerse yourself in medieval life in the encampment, where you can listen to merry music, join in with the jester’s jokes and learn about cookery and crafts from centuries ago!


Cheer strongmen at the Peak District Highland Games

29 August 2021

Cheer on strongmen as they face the ultimate test of strength at this popular annual event at Matlock Farm Park, where challenges include the 8-tonne tractor pull, the tossing of the caber, the giant stone throw and the 120kg log press. There’ll be plenty of entertainment elsewhere in the park including craft, market and games stalls – plus the chance to meet animals including horses, sheep and meerkats.


Go Back to the Future at Great British Car Journey's DeLorean Day

30 August 2021

Head back to the future at this classic car visitor attraction in Ambergate to celebrate 40 years of the iconic DeLorean. There will be something for all ages, with a selection of DeLorean cars on display, including a rare model, plus the chance to meet experts and even sit in a real-life DeLorean! Children are encouraged to come in Back To The Future costumes. Pre-booking is essential. Don't miss the chance to tour the amazing exhibits charting over 100 years of British motoring history - from the Mini to the latest McLaren!


Meet Superheroes at the Summer Finale at Gulliver's Kingdom

4-5 September 2021

Set on a stunning hillside above Matlock Bath, you'll discover adventure and adrenaline aplenty at Gulliver's Kingdom. Experience a range of rides and attractions such as the Western World and Pirates Play area, the log flume and Drop Tower, and the jaw-dropping Zip Line. From 4-5 September, there'll be the chance to enjoy Superhero Skills, Superhero Olympics, special shows and entertainment and fancy dress competitions. Selected rides and attractions will be open until 8.30pm on 4th September, culminating in a fabulous fireworks display

Feed the Lemurs at Peak Wildlife Park

Get up close to some of the world's most endangered animals at this family-friendly wildlife park near Leek, or for a day to remember book onto an animal experience and Meet the Lemurs! Enjoy a half an hour encounter focused around the feeding of the park's resident ring-tailed lemurs, black and white ruffed lemurs, black lemurs and red bellied lemurs, all within their unique walkthrough lemur exhibit! Take a spectacular cable car journey to this 60-acre country park and discover fun for the whole family including guided cavern tours, great places to eat and drink, adventure playgrounds, show caverns and exhibitions. Throughout the summer, there'll also be classic Punch and Judy Shows three times a day next to the spectacular amphitheatre.


Enjoy summer at Chatsworth

Home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family.
