Christmas at Chatsworth

Things may be a little different this Christmas, but if you live locally there are still plenty of ways to get into the festive spirit in the Peak District & Derbyshire. Providing you follow the latest Government guidelines regarding Tier restrictions, there are outdoor attractions and festive events right here on your doorstep, for the whole family to enjoy.

1. Enjoy Christmas in the Garden at Chatsworth, near Bakewell


Soak up the festive atmosphere at the magnificent home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Wrap up warm and explore the 105-acre garden via a delightful Christmas trail and admire the illuminated features from dusk. See the lights along the Broadwalk and Willow Tree Fountain. Make the most of your visit with a trip to the farmyard, gift shops and famous Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop for locally-sourced festive treats. 2. Enjoy festive fun in the great outdoors at Matlock Farm Park, Matlock


Meet Father Christmas and Mrs Claus each weekend throughout December and also on 21, 22 & 23. Take the time to feed their animal friends and write your Christmas letters before posting them in the North Pole letterbox! See if you can solve the clues in the Christmas Treasure Hunt throughout the Park, and saddle-up to enjoy Christmas pony rides. The café and indoor play centre remain closed, but takeaway outlets are serving delicious hot food and a range of drinks. Find out more and book tickets here.


3. Walk on the wild side at Peak Wildlife Park, near Leek


Come face to face with exotic and endangered animals from across three continents on a fun, festive day out for the whole family. Explore Lemur Heights, Penguin Paths, Wallaby Wanderland and the African Village – with festive magical decorations throughout. Tickets must be booked in advance, here.


4. Discover Cromford Mills' wonderful weekend Christmas Markets


In the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, find festive fun and support local businesses and craft people at the weekend Christmas Market. Located in the historic Mill Yard at Cromford Mills, you'll find festive gifts and delectable treats that are sure to bring the holiday cheer. Don't forget to treat yourself to festive takaway treat from the Mill cafes and see if you complete the Georgian Christmas Trail. For more details, click here.


5. Take a Santa and Steam Adventure on the Churnet Valley Railway


Enjoy a magical start to the Christmas season by taking a ride aboard the Santa Express in the Staffordshire Peak District. Father Christmas and his Christmas Elves will be travelling on a steam train instead of his normal reindeer-hauled sleigh – and you're all invited to join. Trains depart from Froghall station on selected dates up to 23 December, with a final opportunity to see Santa on Christmas Eve. Find out more and book tickets here.


6. Enjoy a magical Christmas in the market town of Chesterfield


Fun festive experiences for the whole family include the Amazing Magical Chesterfield Santa House, where you can meet Santa via the virtual ‘Santa Zoomer'. Get the opportunity to chat with Santa before you go into a very special Augmented Reality experience in which Santa will magically appear with you!

7. Shop local at the virtual Peak District & Christmas Market


Still searching for that perfect present? Look no further than our virtual Peak District & Derbyshire Christmas Market, featuring over 100 local indepdent businesses selling everything from art, homeware and photography, to local food and drink and great gift vouchers. Not only will you find unique, high-quality presents, but you'll also be supporting small producers at a critical time. Visit the market here.
 


8. Browse festive stalls in the market town of Bolsover


On 19 December, independent businesses will join Old Bolsover Yard with their festive stalls for a spot of Christmas shopping. A truly unique experience and a great chance to purchase quality local gifts. Find out more here


9. Find local gifts at Derby Festive Markets


From 11-13 December and 18-23 December, Derby Market Place will be strung with lights and will be a spacious, seasonal home to small businesses showcasing stalls featuring creative crafts, gifts, food and more.
The markets will be free to enter, but capacity on the Market Place will be limited on each weekend to allow for social distancing - so please be patient, queue respectfully or come back later when it's quieter. Find out more here.

11. Soak up the Christmas Magic at Markeaton Park, near Derby


From Saturday 5 to Sunday 20 December, visit Markeaton Craft Village to see the dazzling Christmas tree there, and to take festive photos. Find Father Christmas’s post box so that you can write him a letter, and follow the Elf Trail for the chance to win a prize! For details click here.


12. #SupportLocal this Christmas


Never has it been more important to support independent businesses and the Peak District & Derbyshire's historic High Streets are bursting with passionate retailers specialising in quality. Stock up on festive food, purchase unique gifts and enjoy delicious takeaway treats whilst showing your support for local communities. Many towns have also introduced special car parking offers in December.
Car parking offers:
- Towns in the Amber Valley - including Belper, Alfreton, Heanor and Ripley - are offering free parking from 11am each day, until Saturday 26 December, in all of the borough council’s pay and display car parks.
- Erewash Borough Council will provide free parking in all of its car parks, with the exception of Long Eaton Railway Station, on every Monday and Tuesday in December from 10am.
- In the Derbyshire Dales, parking is free in any District Council pay and display car park after 2pm throughout December.
