The St John Street Gallery & Café is situated in the historic Georgian Market Town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire, the ideal place to soak up the historic atmosphere and present-day culture of the area. One of the largest art galleries in the region, we exhibit a large variety of contemporary art, including original paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics and glass over four floors of gallery space.
Once Ashbourne’s Magistrate’s Court, this spacious grade 2 listed building now showcases more than forty of the area’s most talented artists in relaxed and informal surroundings. The work of renowned artists further afield is also available and various local artists present workshops at the gallery on a regular basis. We are the proud sponsors of the art prizes for the annual Ashbourne Festival including hosting a fringe event that showcases the work of local artists.
After exploring the historical buildings (e.g. the Grade I listed Old Grammar School, St Oswald's Parish Church, the 17th century Mansion of Dr John Taylor) and many quirky shops around town, why not relax in our spacious and dog-friendly, award-winning Café upstairs, where the focus is on flavoursome, healthy food in a continental style. We prepare our food on the premises using the highest quality produce from leading local suppliers with healthy options always available. The café serves high quality Italian coffee, a variety of ‘bottomless’ loose leaf teas, alcoholic and soft drinks and offers a choice of delicious home-baked cakes. We cater for a wide range of special dietary requirements, including gluten free, dairy free, sugar free, vegetarian and vegan.
The spacious café provides ample seating capacity and small to medium groups can be easily accommodated. The separate mezzanine floor is ideal for private meetings, workshops or just a friendly get together. Bookings are essential.
We are within walking distance from the popular Tissington Walking and Cycling Trail and popular tourist attractions like Dovedale, Ilam Village, Milldale and Carsington Water are within 10 minutes’ drive.
Treat yourself to a truly unique experience where you can enjoy good food in a friendly environment steeped in art, history and culture.
