Stoney Middleton

About

This village is well named, having many houses clinging to the steep limestone cliffs of a rocky dale.

Most people pass through Stoney Middleton on the busy main road through the village, but here are some interesting little nooks and crannies in the narrow side lanes. It was once an important centre for lead mining and mineral extraction is still much in evidence nearby.

Things to do; St Martin's Church, tucked away in The Nook, it is of an unusual octagonal design with a perpendicular tower. Beyond the church are the warm springs of the reputedly Roman Baths, recently restored. Craggy Middleton Dale is a favourite spot for rock climbers and cavers. In the village are a general store, a good pub called The Moon Inn, a chip shop unusually located in an old tollhouse and a café/ restaurant at the spot called The Lovers Leap. There is a Wakes (Carnival) Week and Well Dressings are held annually in late July.
