Miller's Dale

Here an exceptionally beautiful section of the River Wye, where it winds through sinuous limestone dales. Set in the heart of the Peak District few places can match the fabulous scenery. The National Park Ranger Centre.

A small settlement in an exceptionally beautiful section of the River Wye, where it winds through sinuous limestone dales. The tiny village in this wonderful location was once a hive of activity, as a junction on the Midland Railway between London and Manchester and an important centre for limestone quarrying. Nowadays just the road through the dale is busy at times and a steady stream of walkers along the old railway line has replaced the trains. Set in the heart of the Peak District few places can match the fabulous scenery.

Tale a walk through history at the newly restored Goods Shed, where visuals and sound tell the story of those who lived and worked here. Things to do; There is a small car park and National Park Ranger Centre at the old railway station, which makes a good place to start an exploration on foot of this fascinating area, with the Monsal Trail being one of the most popular routes in the country. The two old railway viaducts straddling the main road stand testimony to the heydays of the railway and there are remnants of the old quarries and limekilns around. Upstream are the delights of Chee Dale and Monks Dale whilst the Wye flows downstream to beautiful Water cum Jolly and Monsal Dale. There is a Youth Hostel nearby at Ravenstor and in the village are a good walkers café and a craft centre specialising in woodturning. There is a pleasant riverside inn but no shops. For nearest other village facilities see Tideswell.
