Bakewell Choral Society - Summer Concert
Madrigals and Spirituals performed by Bakewell Choral Society. Folk songs performed by Sylvia Needham & Keith Kendrick. Poetry readings by local art groups.
When: 24th June 2023, 7:30pm
Bakewell Choral Society will present its Summer Concert on Saturday 24th June at 7.30pm at The Medway Centre, New Street, Bakewell.
The theme of the concert reflects love and freedom, with a mixture of humorous and more serious pieces. The programme includes 16th and 17th century madrigals, spirituals composed and published in the 20th century, poetry performed by local arts groups and folk songs performed by local duo Sylvia Needham and Keith Kendrick.
The concert includes spirituals and poems by black writers about freedom, slavery and oppression. The experiences written about are theirs but shared with us freely.
Our intent in including these pieces is to show respect for all those who have endured and still endure the heinous effects of racism and oppression around the world. We are honoured to perform works reflecting their feelings and experiences.
Tickets are £10 – students and accompanied children free.
Tickets available on the door, from any choir member or from The Little Vagabond Bookshop, Unit 9, Orme Court, Granby Road, Bakewell. They can also be ordered online at www.bakewellchoral.co.uk (a booking fee applies).
