      About

White Peak Distillery a craft whisky and spirit distillery located in the Derwent Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site at the gateway to the Peak District National Park. We make Wire Works Whisky, Shining Cliff Gin a Derbyshire Cask Aged Rum. We have a shop on-site and we welcome visitors on tours every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We are focussed on producing authentic, small batch spirits that are inspired by our beautiful location on the edge of Shining Cliff Woods and the River Derwent. The Still House occupies the former victorian maintenance sheds of the Johnson & Nephew Wireworks. We’re uncompromising in our approach to product quality and flavour.

We set out to do something unique in the Peak District region where whisky has never been made before. This hasn’t meant throwing out traditions that have stood the test of time, but we want to put down our own marker. We take our time to create our whisky from English barley using a unique yeast blend with links to Derbyshire’s brewing heritage. Our fermentations are long, to develop flavour in our spirit before we mature it in casks. Our pot stills have been hand-built at a traditional coppersmith to our designs, to fit the character we want for our spirit.

The ancient woodland of Shining Cliff, right behind our distillery, was the inspiration for our original floral-style Derbyshire dry gin. The woodland and hedgerows we walk and cycle past daily offer up an abundance of seasonal botanicals from woodland berries to delicate mayflower. Our Original gin is made from 13 botanicals, which we vapour distill to capture all of the delicate flavours. The finished result is a complex yet perfectly balanced, smooth dry gin, with a wonderful floral nose. Our Shining Cliff gin range also includes Citrus, Spiced and Bakewell Pud.

Our tasting tours are run in groups of up to 16 people and last approximately 60 minutes. We run Distillery Tours, Whisky Tours and Warehouse Tours - each tour is slightly different to suit different interests - find out which one is best for you on our website. During any of our tours, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere, heat and smells of our working distillery. We’ll take you behind the scenes in our still house, home to our two beautiful hand-made copper stills, and in our cask storage areas to see our whisky being made and matured. You’ll also get to see ‘Betty’ our 600 litre spirits still, used to make our award winning Shining Cliff gin and other spirits. Then it’s back to the Tasting Room for a tasting and a chance for further discussion.
