Location
Situated in the heart of the Peak District, Cross View offers a wide choice of walks literally on the doorstep. Cressbrook Dale, for example, is famous for its orchids. To see its flowers at their best, visit in May or June, but it is unmissable at any time of year. The village has a shop and the excellent Red Lion pub.
The larger village of Tideswell, five minutes’ drive away, has more shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as a beautiful church known locally as ‘The Cathedral of the Peak’.
The nearest towns are Buxton and Bakewell. Buxton is known for its mineral water, architecture and opera house. Bakewell is a bustling market town with a weekly livestock and general market every Monday. It is also the home of the Bakewell Pudding, and has a range of shops selling pudding made to the ‘original’ recipe.
The area is steeped in history, from stately homes such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall to the village of Eyam, famous for the heroic efforts of its residents during the Great Plague to stop the plague spreading to the rest of the Peak District. There is also industrial history in and around the old water mills of Litton Mill and Cressbrook Mill, which powered the Industrial Revolution.
The picturesque village of Castleton is noted for its caves, its Norman castle and the locally mined Blue John Stone, which makes beautiful jewellery.
This is a paradise for walkers and cyclists, with numerous routes to choose from, at a range of lengths and difficulties.
