About

The region's most important prehistoric site, sometimes referred to as the 'Stonehenge of the Peak District'. Arbor Low is a Neolithic henge monument atmospherically set amid high moorland. Surrounded by unspoiled countryside with fantastic views over classic Derbyshire scenery. Within an earthen bank and ditch, a circle of some 50 white limestone slabs, all now fallen, surrounds a central stone 'cove' - a feature found only in major sacred sites. Nearby is enigmatic Gib Hill, a large burial mound two hundred metres away to the south-west. A Bronze Age burial mound which may have once been connected with Arbor Low by an earth bank. This is an impressively large tumulus, 5 metres high and 10 metres in diameter, and was also excavated by Bateman who found a large burial cist here in 1848. The monument is in the care of English Heritage and access is via a private farm , where there is a small car park and a tin in which you are requested to place your admission fee
