Halloween fun at Calke Abbey near Derby

15th-30th October 2022

At Calke Abbey, uncover the history of Halloween as you explore the spooky tunnel connecting the historic house to the stable yards and try a soul cake – a take on shortbread historically given in return for prayers for the dead, and available from the restaurant all week.

Inspired by the traditions of turnip-carving and jack-o'-lanterns, the garden team will be putting on a display of pumpkins and gourds on the Auricula Theatre and don’t miss the 17th-century book of Natural Magick on display in the house. Cycle hire is open every day at Calke Explore, with the Tramway Trail nearby providing an all-weather route for wheels and walkers alike.

At nearby Foremark and Staunton Harold, families can blow off the Halloween cobwebs at the two play areas, or crunch through the leaves on an autumnal walk through the woods.

Family fun at the Halloween Festival at Bluebells, Derby

As well as award-winning ice cream galore at Bluebell Dairy in Spondon, Derby, there’s a pumpkin picking patch with thousands of pumpkins and every child ticket gets you a free pumpkin! There's also a Halloween trail, and daily spooky shows, and always something frightening for you to enjoy.

Spooktacular Halloween trails at Carsington and Tittesworth

22nd-30th October 2022

Find the spooky scenes and answer the questions or complete an activity to get a prize! Taking place at Carsington Water near Wirksworth or Tittesworth near Leek, every day from 10am-3:30pm. Fancy dress is highly encouraged! No booking required, just come to site and you can buy your trail map for £3 each from the reception in the visitor centre.

Scarefest at Alton Towers

This Halloween celebrate 15 years of Scarefest. As the nights get longer, tiptoe into Alton Towers Resort for all sorts of creey scares, shocks and thrills. Expect spines to be tingled! Visit 4th-6th November for the ultimate firework spectacular.

Fang-tastic Halloween Festival at Matlock Farm Park

24th-30th October 2022

There's so much to see and do at Matlock Farm Park this October half term. Don't miss the return of their Pumpkin Patch, for children to pick their own pumpkin, using their little wheelbarrows and carve at the carving station (small charge applies). There's a daily Spooky Trail in the Enchanted Forest, with prop based sets and riddles galore!

Plus, there will also be Live fun (not scary!) Halloween characters to meet on your way through the spooky trail at set times of the day. They’ll be pottering around the park too to meet with our visitors and have lots of fun with!

Enjoy daily witchcraft workshops for children, spot the Headless Horseman and get on the spot prizes for best fancy dress!

The Children’s Country House at Sudbury

The Children’s Country House is full of activity over October half term and is the perfect place to visit with the family. Aimed at children aged 0-12 visitors can discover the newly opened hall from 22 October, believed to be a first-of-its-kind heritage experience. Children and their grown-ups are encouraged to interact and engage with the history of Sudbury Hall.

As well as the hall, visitors can explore the museum and go on a journey of childhood through the ages, and hunt for grasshoppers across the gardens before heading inside the Activity Hub to create seasonal-themed pieces such as spooky crafts, leaf glass lanterns and dried flower wreaths.

Ilam Park, Dovedale and the White Peak

22nd-31st October 2022

This October half term, embark on a Spooky Potions Trail at Ilam Park and see how many frightful ingredients you can find. Try and spot plants, fungi and animals with strange names, such as enchanter’s nightshade, witch hazel, dead man’s fingers, and stinkhorn. Check them off on your spotter sheet and see what type of imaginary potion you make.

After completing the trail, head to the cosy Manifold tea-room for a warming drink and snack, while grown-ups can enjoy a seasonal pumpkin spiced latte.

The Trail runs 10.30am-3pm. Trails cost £2 and are available from the second-hand bookshop.

Kedleston Hall, near Derby

22nd October 2022

Explore the grounds at Kedleston, kick through the crunchy leaves and look out for the birds feasting on wild berries and the fungi growing on fallen tree trunks. There are so many autumn treasures to discover at Kedleston, from conkers to the golds, reds and browns of fallen leaves.

On Saturday 22 October, bring a bit of magical light to the autumn darkness and join artist Kate Doncaster to create your own lantern using biodegradable materials. The one-hour workshops run at 11am, 12.15pm and 1.30pm and are run in collaboration with Surtal Arts. Please book your place online. Suitable for ages 6+.

Halloween Fun at Chatsworth, near Bakewell

Enjoy autumnal fun and Halloween horrors in the Chatsworth farmyard this half-term holiday. Bring your little monsters to the farmyard to meet the animals and join in with creepy Halloween themed activities this Autumn half term.

As well as our fun daily activities, such as animal feeding and milking demonstrations, you can join in with a visit to the pumpkin patch where you can choose your own pumpkin; carve and decorate your pumpkin to take home; try Halloween themed face painting and spooky Halloween themed crafts.

If you're feeling brave you could even go on a mysterious journey on the spooky tractor and trailer ride - who knows what lies in store?

There aren't just the scares to enjoy at Screamfest, there's also spectacular live entertainment running all night including extreme performers, rides and scarily good food and drink.
