Chesterfield Well Dressing under Construction at Chesterfield Market
An ancient custom that's only found in or around the borders of Derbyshire. Well dressing might date back to the Celts, or perhaps even earlier, but what exactly is it? At its simplest, well dressing is the art of decorating springs and wells with pictures made from natural materials. But this doesn't explain how well dressers make such intricate and detailed pictures using only flowers, berries, leaves ... Last year, Chesterfield's well dressing used dried chamomile flowers, peppercorns, rowan berries, sweet cicely seeds, eggshell and melon seeds, as well as other dried and fresh plants and flowers.
Find out how a well dressing is made by watching the well dressers at work. After claying the board, work will begin on outlining and ‘colouring in’ the design. Dried materials such as straw, alder cones and peppercorns will be used early in the week. Rowan berries will add some colour on Wednesday but fresh flowers won't be added until Thursday as they will be the first to fade.

Chesterfield Market has no car park of its own, but is signposted from all town centre car parks. The directions below are to the nearest car parks.
From North/South
Leave M1 at junction 29 and follow A617 to Chesterfield (approx 4 miles). At traffic light controlled roundabout select middle lane and take 3rd exit. At next roundabout select middle lane and take 2nd exit (Lordsmill Street). Select left hand lane and take first left (Beetwell Street). Follow road for approx 500 yards (passing Vicar Lane multi storey car park on right and Chesterfield Coach Station on left), and turn left down Park Road. Take first left turning into Beetwell Street multi storey car park.
For surface car parks at traffic light controlled roundabout select left lane and take 3rd exit. At next roundabout select left lane and take 1st exit (continuous lane, Markham Road). At traffic lights select right hand lane and go straight on. At roundabout (Matalan, traffic light controlled) keep in right lane and take 4th exit turning left into Rutland Road. Select right hand lane and at traffic lights at top of hill turn right. Take 2nd right turning (Rose Hill West) and turn into car park on left or right.
From East
Follow A617 to junction with M1 motorway, then follow route from North/South.
From West
Follow A619 to Chesterfield. At traffic light controlled roundabout (Lidl on left) select middle lane and take 2nd exit turning left into Rutland Road (surface car parks). Select right hand lane at traffic lights at top of hill and turn right. Take 2nd right turning (Rose Hill West) and turn into car park on left or right.
For multi-storey car park - at Lidl roundabout select middle lane and take 2nd exit going straight on. At traffic lights go straight on. Follow road over raised toucan crossing, turn right after Formula One Garage (Park Road). Take first left turning into Beetwell Street multi storey car park.
