Wormhill Well Dressing under Construction at Wormhill
Find out more about this ancient Derbyshire custom by watching the well dressers working on the dressing. The main well in Wormhill is a very large sectional board. This is filled with clay then the theme, drawn on tracing paper, is placed on the clay and ‘pricked out’. This means using a dress makers wheel to make marks on the clay along each line, like a dot-to-dot puzzle. The picture is then outlined with alder cones and filled in with other natural materials – beans, berries, reeds, flower petals…
