Whaley Bridge Well Dressing under Construction at Whaley Bridge
Find out more about this ancient Derbyshire custom by watching the well dressers at work. The design is drawn on artists’ tracing paper and ‘pricked out’ onto the clay. This involves making small cuts along each line like a dot-to-dot puzzle. The picture is then outlined in wool and sweet cicely seeds, the filled in with greenery, local stone, coal and wool to represent the industrial archaeological heritage of Whaley, and flower petals.
