Eyam Well Dressing Under Construction at Eyam
Find out more about this ancient custom by watching the well dressers working to dress the well. Some of the well dressers in Eyam draw their design directly onto the clay while others draw it on paper to place over the clay. In this case the design is transferred to the clay by ‘pricking out’, making a series of holes along each line, like a dot-to-dot picture. The villagers then outline the design with sweet Cecily seeds and ‘colour it in’ with petals, leaves, seeds and other natural materials.
