The 2013 Peak District Visitor Guide was launched in December 2012, with the stunning front cover shot of a Mam Tor Sunrise taken by our longest standing Destination Photography Partner Stephen Elliott. Stephen told us a little bit about when he visited this iconic Peak District location, with a few of his students in August 2012.
"I often get asked why I get up at silly o'clock to go and stand up on a hillside in the dark waiting for the sun to rise. Sometimes I ask myself the same question but not this particular morning. This was one of the best sunrises I've ever had the opportunity to photograph. One August morning, while running one of my landscape photography workshops up on Mam Tor ridge, the conditions looked promising as we made the lung busting climb up to the trig point at 04:00 am. You could see the layers of cloud building and a dull, red streak running across the horizon giving a hint of what was to come. With our cameras sat on tripods and neutral density graduated filters adjusted, it was just a case of waiting and watching the lightshow unfold before our very eyes. This was a truly magical experience, which more than makes up for the disappointment when nothing happens."
