Crich Tramway Village's reputation as one of the most important historic transport
attractions in the country will be further enhanced this year when it celebrates
the legendary Leyland marque with a groundbreaking 'Leylands at Crich' event.
Crich, which is home to the National Tramway Museum, stages various special events
every year, many of which have a transport theme. 'Leylands at Crich' looks set
to be one of the biggest events of 2008 for the Village, and attract historic
transport enthusiasts from all over the country.
The Crich event will also form part of a double anniversary celebration, with
the Leyland Society celebrating its 10th birthday this year, and the 1908 Leyland
X2 double-deck bus - the oldest restored Leyland vehicle and also the oldest surviving
British-built motorbus - reaching its centenary.
To be held on Sunday 13th July, the event will offer a fantastic opportunity to see many other very rare
Leyland buses and lorries.
Cara Marchant, Marketing Manager at Crich said: “We are thrilled to be holding
this event at Crich Tramway Village in conjunction with the Leyland Society. The
period street scene with vintage trams rumbling to and fro along the cobbled street
makes a superb backdrop for the Leylands and offers some fantastic photo opportunities.”
“This is a most important landmark in British Motoring history,” says Mike Sutcliffe,
Secretary of The Leyland Society. “To mark the occasion I am planning to transport
the whole of my fleet of eight Leyland buses and charabanc, dating from 1908 to
1924, to Crich Tramway Village where the vehicles will be running and on display."
As an added bonus Mike’s fleet of buses will also be at Crich Tramway Village
during its Edwardian Weekend on 5th and 6th July.
Crich Tramway Village is open on weekends in March then daily from 21 March until
2 November. It is situated near Matlock, Derbyshire, eight miles from M1 junction
