The National Forest

Walking in the National ForestWalking in the National ForestWelcome to the National Forest, the country’s most ambitious environmental project.  Sweeping across parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire, 200 square miles of town and countryside are being transformed, blending ancient woodland with new planting to create a new National Forest for all to enjoy.

An ideal choice for great days out or short breaks, explore the forest for yourself on foot, by bike or on horseback, along the miles of outstanding trails. Visit Rosliston Forestry Centre with plenty to see and do, or Conkers, where activities are based up on life in a British woodland - tackle an assault course, walk across a precipice, trace animal tracks or even hear like a bat!

Take yourself back in time to Ashby Castle, visit the 1920s at Calke Abbey, or wander the streets of the attractive Georgian town of Melbourne with many historic buildings and a fine range of local shops, pubs and restaurants.

Explore the remarkable inland canal port at Shardlow, and learn more about the region’s industrial heritage at the Shardlow Heritage Centre. Pottery enthusiasts will love Sharpe’s Pottery Museum and the well known T G Green Pottery in Swadlincote.

The National Forest brings together a wonderful range of things to do and see, and a wonderful environment for your visit or break.
