The Peak District celebrated five years of the Walking Festival in May 2009, with more than 100 walks and activities over the duration of the 10-day festival.
Set amid an extraordinary range of landscapes, from the dramatic heather moorlands and gritstone edges of the Dark Peak to the gently rolling limestone valleys of the White Peak, the Peak District Walking Festival took place from 25th April to the 4th May and included a wide range of guided walks with local experts leading walks on themes such as food and drink, ghosts, heritage, geology.
There was even an opportunity to try Nordic Walking – some members of the Visit Peak District & Derbyshire staff tried out this increasingly popular form of walking, which uses ski poles, in Buxton Pavilion Gardens recently during a news feature for BBC television.
Enthusiastic walkers return time and again to enjoy the stunning countryside, capture the views and clear their minds of the pressures of everyday life. Other visitors like to amble around at a gentler pace, perhaps taking in the delights of local villages and stopping for a refreshing pint or afternoon tea along the way.
Dates for the 2010 Festival are not yet confirmed but will be made available on this page over the coming months so please bookmark and check back.
