All the national assessing organisations – Visit Britain, Visit Scotland, Visit Wales and the AA – now assess hotel, guest and self-catering accommodation to the same standards and award one to five stars. The star rating reflects the overall quality of the experience
The different types of accommodation (hotels, guest accommodation, self-catering, hostels, campsites etc) are assessed by separate criteria to achieve their rating. When choosing your accommodation, look for the Quality Rose, the mark of England's official, nationwide quality assessment scheme, or the AA logo – both assess to the same standard.
Accommodation providers who have exceptional bedrooms and bathrooms and offer guests a very special welcome, but who are unable to achieve a higher star rating, may be recognised by a Gold or Silver award within the Visit Britain scheme.
For example, a two star B&B or guest house may not be able to achieve a higher rating simply because it doesn't have en-suite bathrooms or may not easily be fitted with wash basins in the bedrooms (three stars), as is sometimes the case with historic properties.
For further information on how accommodation is assessed, please see Enjoy England's Star Quality leaflets, which are available free of charge from Tourist Information Centres.
