Torrs Hydro is the first community funded hydroelectric scheme. It is generating green electricity as well as an interest in Water power. Green power is produced using a Reverse Archimedes Screw and produces around 250.000 kwh over a typical year. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 50 typical British homes and saves over 150 tonnes of CO enissions conpared to conventional electricity generation.

Water flowing in from the River Sett and River Goyt is held by blades of the turbine. Gravity pulls the water down rotating the turbine and the attached generator to produce clean, green electricity. The locak Cooperative Food Superstore buys all the electricity. Any power surplus to their needs is sold throgh the National Grid.
