Details

The Centre is a fully registered museum and includes fixed and temporary exhibitions by local artists, information on local events and a shop selling crafts, books, maps and trails. The displays describe the formation of the Torrs gorge, the pre-industrial history including Domesday and the royal forest of Peak, the story of the 'New Mill' which gave its name to the town, and the growth of communications, coal mining, and the textile and calico print industries. (For young visitors there is a reconstruction of a coal mine tunnel to crawl through. A special attraction is the model of the town in 1884.

New Mills can be reached by road via the Stockport to Buxton road (A6), turning off onto the A6015 at Newtown where it is signposted (brown signs) and also from the direction of Chinley (B6062), Marple (B6101) and Hayfield (A6015). The Heritage Centre is next to the bus station in the town centre. Central railway station (on the Manchester-Sheffield line) is 200 yards from the Centre, and the station at Newtown (on the Manchester-Buxton line) is about 20 minutes walk. Buses to New Mills bus station are the 358 (Hayfield - Stockport) and 361 (Glossop - Stockport). Routes 199 (Buxton-Stockport-Manchester Airport) and Trans Peak (Nottingham-Manchester) pass through Newtown on the A6. Free car parking (for two hours) is available in the town very close to the Heritage Centre. Permits for a stay of over two hours are available at the Centre and newsagents.
