CressbrookIn an elevated location Cressbrook, is of the beaten track, set amongst secluded wooded dales and beautiful countryside.
Mid way between Buxton and Bakewell, but well away from main roads, this is a secretive sort of village rising up the steep sides of the dale above the river Wye. It is actually at the junction of dales, where Cressbrook Dale joins the river Wye and Millers Dale becomes Monsal Dale. This puts it at the very heart of some of the most classic Derbyshire dales scenery. The village grew around its' cotton mill, now converted to luxury apartments, in the early 19th Century and most buildings are contemporary with it. The very fine stone built Hall is gloriously set above the dale with beautiful vitas down the Wye valley.
Things to do; The popular Monsal Trail passes through the south of village along a most attractive section of the old Midland Railway line. The millponds attract abundant wildlife, especially in the part delightfully called Water-cum-Jolly, where sheer limestone cliffs rise from the riverside. Cressbrook Dale and the part called Ravensdale are just as attractive and are popular with rock climbers. There are annual Well Dressings in June. The nearest village with facilities is Tideswell.
