ARKWRIGHT SOCIETY LECTURE SERIES – DERBYSHIRE INDUSTRIES: Taking The Waters-The History of Spas & Hydros

Join us for this talk on the historic business of taking the waters. The pre-Reformation use of holy wells was to effect cures and the success of such ancient watering-places as Bath and Buxton spurred on the growth of new spas, like Harrogate, Scarborough and Matlock Bath. Mike Higginbottom will explore their history, significance in social life and literature through the eighteenth century, and their decline and the subsequent popularity of hydrotherapy, which created significant growth in such towns as Matlock and Ilkley.
