A tiny medieval hilltop hamlet overshadowed by the imposing shell of Riber Castle.
Local entrepreneur John Smedley had the castle built here, and it has been a landmark for miles around since 1862. Smedley never lived in it, and over the years it has been used as a school, storage depot and a wildlife reserve, in the early years of the 21st Century it is privately owned and awaiting development. There are some much finer buildings off the narrow lanes, including Riber Hall and the Manor House.
Things to do; Just a mile south of Matlock, the walk up from the town to the viewpoint at the front of the castle grounds gives very spectacular panoramic views that go on for miles. There is a farm shop selling organic produce and the Hall is an exclusive hotel and restaurant but there are no other visitor facilities. See also Matlock.
