The Village

The Village

Stephen Mather

A large working village, nestling at the bottom of its' own limestone dale set in the glorious Hope Valley.

Bradwell is surrounded by some fabulous countryside and is unusual for having both its' own gritstone edge and limestone dale. The village developed during the heydays of the lead mining industry and was once famous for producing the "Bradder Beaver" - the hard brimmed hat worn by most Peak District miners. It is still an industrious place with some light engineering units, quarrying and nearby cement factory. The older part of the village has some interesting steep lanes and pretty cottages. A local family firm produces delicious ice cream from a shop in the village.

Things to do; Special adventure caving experiences are available to the public at the The Bagshawe Cavern - a show cave with a difference, as you may have to get dirty to see it! Bradwell Edge is a favourite haunt for hang gliders and fixed-wing gliders. The North Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club can provide accompanied pre-booked flights. A mile north of the village at Brough is the site of the Roman Fort of Navio this, and some other mysterious mounds called the Grey Ditch can be explored on foot. Well Dressings and Carnival Week are held annually in August.
