Unstone is a small village on the River Drone between Chesterfield and Dronfield, with pretty countryside just a short step away.
In common with Dronfield, edge tools such as sickles and scythes were made in Unstone in the 17th and 18th Centuries but, by the 19th Century, the main industry was coal mining. A railway line was put in to serve the collieries which have since closed down. Little remains of the industry today and the railway route is now managed as a nature reserve. Within the reserve are the remains of old kilns used for charcoal and coke production. This was a long tradition in the area and there has probably been some sort of oven on the site since medieval times.
Visitors can explore the area around Unstone with the Countryside Walks in Derbyshire leaflet number 4 - Unstone, Frith Wood and Summerley.
