Wed 26 Oct Fun on the Green

Findern is a tranquil South Derbyshire village situated about 8 miles west of Derby. It has a traditional village green, originally with a duck pond, overlooked by All Saints Parish Church (which was rebuilt in 1864-4), the Post Office, shops and numerous cottages that lie on its edge.

A carved semicircular stone or 'tympanum' discovered when the previous Norman Church was demolished in 1862, is preserved in the present building. Silk weaving was once a widespread cottage industry in the village, the work being 'let out' from the factories in Derby and Belper. Jedediah Strutt, who set up the great mills at Belper was originally apprenticed to a Findern blacksmith.

There are a number of self guided village walks booklets available for Findern. Please contact Swadlincote Tourist Information Centre for your free copy of the Findern Historical Walk leaflet - A history trail and guided walk around the village and footpaths of Findern.

Now Available! The 'Findern and Willington Walk' one in a series of walks published in the 'More Country Walks in South Derbyshire' booklet priced at £2.00 (+50p postage). Please contact the Tourist Information Centre to obtain your copy.
