Chelmorton

A classic White Peak limestone village in stunning upland scenery, a very quiet and peaceful village.

Chelmorton is one of the highest villages not only in Derbyshire, but all England and this region known locally as Top Country. One of the dominant features of the White Peak landscape are the limestone walls and there is nowhere better to see these than in and around Chelmorton. The strip like crofts and patchwork of walls run at right angles off the main street. The village is built along this single street running up to the church of St John the Baptist, with its' graceful spire topped by a weather vane in the shape of a locust. Behind the church is Chelmorton Low (low in the Peak perversely signifies a height) and from here the delightful Illy Will Water stream runs down through the village. There is an unusual stone-built telephone box in the village.

Things to do; Walking is the main activity for visitors here, with the Midshires Way and a string of routes radiating from the village en route to some amazing limestone dales and lofty heights with panoramic views without peer. There is a fine village inn and a god range of holiday accommodation in and around the village. Handily placed for both Buxton and Bakewell it is an ideal base for touring the area.
