Details

Rowthorne is a picturesque conservation village surrounded by beautiful Derbyshire countryside and yet only 5 minutes' drive from the M1 motorway. It sits on the edge of the Hardwick Estate with its 500 acres of ancient woodlands, fishing lakes and wonderful walks.

The manor of Rugetorn was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the property of Roger de Bush, who founded Blythe Priory in 1088, although only the church remains today. The village passed to Robert de Lexington of Laxton in Nottinghamshire, who gave it to the abbot and convent of Newstead. In 1583, Lord Chancelor Bromley gave the manor to Sir William Cavendish, the husband of 'Bess of Hardwick'

The best way to explore the area around Rowthorne is on foot. The Rowthorne Trail links to the Pleasley and Teversal Trails, Lady Spencers Walk and the Three Villages Walk. The Rowthorne Trail follows the route of the old railway line. It's said that, when the railway company wanted to build the line, the Duke of Devonshire (who owned Hardwick Hall at the time) insisted that a private station must be built for him one mile from the Hall!

Self-catering holiday accommodation is available in the village.
