Sat 3 - Tue 6 Dec Christmas Tree Festival

Pleasley is a pretty village set astride the River Meden. The river is the boundary between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire so the village is split between the two counties. The river also marks the boundary of the ancient Sherwood Forest, which once covered parts of Derbyshire as well as Nottinghamshire.

There is evidence that people have lived in the area since the Ice Age, but the village wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Church dates back to the 13th Century and the remains of what may be a medieval cross are in the churchyard. In 1816, an earthquake split the steeple and the Church was greatly restored later in the 19th Century.

Whilst Pleasley in Derbyshire was a mining village, across the River Meden it was dominated by William Hollins' famous cotton mills dating from 1785. Pleasley Colliery was sunk in 1877 and closed 110 years later. The pit's remaining buildings are a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the reclaimed land around it has become a country park. As well as birds and rare orchids, Pleasley Pit Country Park holds the record for different species of dragonfly - 18 have been recorded there. Regular guided walks looking at wildlife are organised by the Pleasley Pit Nature Study Group (
