A tiny, remote hamlet set in glorious dales scenery.
Gratton is really a group of scattered farms and isolated cottages set in narrow lanes the between Elton and Youlgreave. Some of the buildings are surprisingly grand for such a remote spot, such as The Old Cheese factory and the Square House, being built of local stone from the old quarries on nearby Anthony Hill. Gratton Grange has a beautiful old cart shed with carved stone pillars visible from the lane nearby.
Things to do; The area is exceptionally scenic, Gratton Dale being a haven of tranquillity where rugged boulders and scrubby vegetation shelter a rich variety of wildlife. Nearby, at Smerrill, the Grange is all that remains of a medieval village. There are no visitor facilities here, for the nearest villages see Elton and Youlgeave.
