CurbarCurbar

A delightful hillside village with fantastic views over the Derwent valley away to the White Peak.

A peaceful village closely linked with the adjoining village of Calver, it has some very fine residential properties. Set below the gritstone crags of Curbar Edge to the east, the village slopes down to reach the banks of a beautifully wooded section of the river Derwent. See also Calver.

Things to do; There are plenty of excellent walking routes, taking in wild moorland, rugged rocks and sylvan riverbanks. One path leads past a curious circular building that was once the village lock-up, higher up the hillside are the Cundy Graves, where victims of the plague of 1632 are buried in an isolated spot. Curbar Edge is a brilliant, lofty viewpoint, heather clad in autumn, and a favourite haunt for rock climbers and hang gliders. There is a riding stable offering pony-trekking and south of the village is Cliffe College, a Methodist Church training college and conference centre. There is a good riverside inn by the bridge, the church of All Saints and a school, but the village has no shops or other facilities. See also Calver.
