Stanton

Stanton, is a small village, of stone built cottages and small farms on the Weaver Hills near Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Its most famous son being Gilbert Sheldon - born in 1598 who became Archbishop of Canterbury and donor of the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, built by Christopher Wren. The house of Sheldon's birth still exists in the centre of the village.

Sheldon was also the chaplin to King Charles I during the English Civil War, however unlike the King, Sheldon kept his head and died in 1677, he is buried in Croydon, Surrey.

The village has a 19th C church(1847) that overlooks the surrounding countryside.
