Close by the dam wall of Carsington Reservoir, Hognaston is a peaceful little village with some pretty cottages.
Hognaston is an ancient settlement, with a pleasant south facing location off the Ashbourne to Wirksworth road. The opening of the reservoir in 1992 proved a mixed blessing, although the village lost much land, it gained a new road system that effectively by-passed it, returning it to the peaceful rural scene of yesteryear. The old church of St Barnabas is gloriously raised up in the centre of the village and has a wonderful Norman doorway.
Things to do; Carsington Water, with its' visitor centre, water sports and wildlife sanctuary is just a short walk away. A Flower Festival is held in the church annually. There is an excellent village inn, the Red Lion, but no shops or other visitor facilities, but Ashbourne is just 4 miles to the southwest.
